New International School Executive Brief

Forest City Innovation Academy Development Proposal

Executive Summary
As the development of Forest City Johor continues to progress there is a clear and strategically planned need for an internationally minded school to be included in the overall design of the city.  Forest City Innovation Academy (FCIA) will provide high quality, environmental and technology based education that aligns with the vision of Forest City, as the role model of a sustainable smart city well ahead of its time.

Background
Forest City is an extensively planned and scaled sustainable, intelligent city development project of four man-made islands located in the Johor Straits between Malaysia and Singapore, where urbanism and sustainability form an equilibrium, creating a dynamic, highly efficient and fulfilling international community.

Recommendations
To meet the needs of the varied international community that will inhabit or commute to the islands, and in order to reach the standards of education that align with the city project vision designed by Sasaki Associates, it is recommended to invest in the creation of Forest City Innovation Academy.  With the mission, “At Forest City Innovation Academy we empower students to pursue their Curiosities in a Diverse, Strategic, and Inspired environment to enable them to become successful leaders in an ever changing world.” we aim to be a leader throughout the world in reaching for the education of the future.

Issues
Strategy Implications
FCIA believes in aligning its mission to the vision and aspirations of the Sasaki designed Forest City development project.  Our mission and vision promote our aim to prepare students to succeed in their technology rich future.
Financial Implications
As Forest City is in the developing stages and the future population is uncertain, there are financial implications to consider.  However, after 6 years of operation, with full expected enrollment, the Net Present Value (NPV) will be $4,550,000.  Even with a more conservative estimation of 75% enrollment in years one to six, the NPV breaks even at a value of 1$. (see Budget Appendix)
Risk Analysis
There is an estimated low risk factor in this investment, as the overall Forest City project has considerable financial backing as well as Malaysian government support to develop this area as the model of smart international cities around the world.
Governance and Leadership
Sasaki Associates has created a school board of 8 members with the responsibilities of recruiting,  hiring, and supporting the Head of School.  The Head of School, who holds all of the responsibilities of the operations of the school, will employ three directors, one in each of the primary, middle, and upper school divisions.

Negotiation Final Project: Apple v. Samsung

Negotiation in the Smartphone Battles: Apple v. Samsung Maria Voicu Tim Wilson Kelsey Giroux Ross Ferris Endicott College For the past four years, Apple and Samsung have been the key players of an unprecedented legal war. It started in 2010 with Samsung’s launch of Galaxy S smartphone, which to Steve Job’s disbelief resembled and used similar technology to the iPhone, the breakthrough phone that his company launched three years before. Disputes over patents, technology, and innovation cost both companies tens of millions, spanned four continents, and five years later has seen little resolution. Background Samsung and Apple are both goliaths in the personal computing industry. Apple is an American prominent hardware and software company founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Stephen Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. It designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics. Apple enjoys a high level of brand loyalty and is the one of the world's most valuable brand. Throughout the...

Scientific Inquiry Method Assignment

Assignment 1: Scientific Inquiry Method My school is a PYP school which, by design, focuses on promoting students’ inquiry and developing strategies for them to follow their own inquiries.  In, what we call PYP 6 (third grade), the unit this term is “ Energy is fundamental to our daily lives”, which carries through to all of the students’ learning experiences including those in physical education class.  The head of PE asked me if I had any ideas on how they could explore the concept of energy within their PE classes (I used to teach PE so he often asks my input).  After talking through a few ideas I thought, wow this would be a perfect opportunity to develop this unit and the process of getting to the learning objectives using the scientific inquiry method.             There are two learning objectives that we are going to focus on.  By the end of the unit students will understand the concepts of: § ...

Change Paper 2 Design Thinking

Developing a School Culture Around Design Thinking The tides of a paradigm shift in education are on the shore.  It is imperative that we prepare our learners to be confident in their abilities to adapt to a rapidly changing world. To instill an innovator’s mindset into all that we do. To get to this point, though, we must create systems of thought and actions that support our values. It is our mission “to inspire students to reach their highest level of personal and academic fulfillment.  To reach that goal, we are not afraid to chart a different path if we believe it will clearly benefit our students.” Innovation does not come from new ideas that suddenly pop into your head, but from ideas that are developed, tested, questioned, and reworked.  To best support this innovative mindset, we will be working on integrating the theories and practices of Design Thinking in all aspects of what we do here at Alcuin.  It is not our aim to change the role of the teacher i...
